Claire gets lost in the rain but isn’t alone in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 23
Outlander Book 4, Chapter 23 sees Claire head out to a homestead on her own. When she returns, she ends up lost in the woods, but she’s not as alone as she would initially think.
We get one of the longest chapters of Drums of Autumn, coming in at a little short of two hours. It’s also an important chapter, playing an important part in the books to come. And yes, it’s all about the books. Plural.
There is a lot of foreshadowing and plot development in this chapter. You just don’t initially see it.
The TV show certainly used this chapter, but did it in a very different way. Sometimes, book storylines need to be moved around in the TV show for better flow. Instead of having this chapter after setting up Fraser’s Ridge, the show connected it to finding Fraser’s Ridge.
Did it work? I certainly thought so. In fact, this was the point in the show when I was still ahead of the books, and nothing felt out of place. I’ll get to that in the adaptation section.
