Claire and Jamie get to know the way of the law in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 11

Claire and Jamie get used to life at River Run a little during Outlander Book 4, Chapter 11. However, they find themselves shocked by some of the laws.

This is the chapter where we find out what happens to slaves who attack white people. Even if that attack is for understandable reasons (and even in self-defense), “justice” is death. It’s a horrifying thing for the Frasers to learn, and it helps to remind the reader of the time period we’re in.

Of course, this chapter was partly used for the TV series. It was heavily adapted though, opting for something that maybe a lot of people would consider doing if they were in the past. I do think the TV show went a little too far, though, and much prefer the book storyline in this instance.

That being said, the TV show has its place. After all, why not try to help a Black man? Would the other slaves rally around Claire for helping? It’s why I am always on the fence with the storyline, although I still think Claire has a White Savior problem.

The Drums of Autumn chapter itself is one of the shorter ones of the book, coming in at around 30 minutes. Yet, it is packed with drama.

Let’s dive into Drums of Autumn Chapter 11.
