Outlander Season 4, Episode 11 foreshadowed the bigger role Marsali would eventually play

Today we mark the two-year anniversary of Outlander Season 4, Episode 11. The episode mostly focused on saving Roger and finding Brianna a husband, but there was an important part of the story involving Marsali and Murtagh.

During this episode, Marsali realizes that her husband, Fergus, is struggling. They want to make a life together in Wilmington, but that’s a little hard when nobody will hire Fergus because of his disability. It has an affect on his mental health as he watches his wife be the one to support the family.

Marsali doesn’t mind supporting the family. That’s not the problem at all. But she realizes that the Fergus she has now is not the man she married, and she’s afraid that he will continue down this path.

She’d rather Fergus risk his life doing something he supports

Marsali turns to Murtagh for help on Outlander Season 4, Episode 11. She’d rather Fergus do something dangerous that she supports than do nothing at all.

There’s no way Fergus would ask to join Murtagh’s cause knowing that it would put Marsali’s life and their home together at risk. But Marsali knows that joining Murtagh’s cause would be good for him. Doing something useful is what Fergus needs—to feel like he’s wanted in the world.

Marsali is there for better or for worse. She knew life would be hard, and she is there for her husband every step of the way.

It’s a glimpse at what’s to come for Marsali on Outlander

One thing Outlander Season 4, Episode 11 gives us is a hint of things to come. It foreshadows everything that’s the come in the show’s story.

Marsali gains a larger role in the fifth season, becoming Claire’s apprentice. At the end of the season, she takes big steps to protect her family.

If someone hurts anyone she cares about, she will be there for them. If someone in her family is struggling, she’ll be there to support them. While she doesn’t quite realize that Young Ian is struggling mentally, she does offer a little bit of support for him without fully understanding.

But there’s one thing that is certain. She loves Fergus and will always be there for him.
