Outlander Season 4, Episode 10: The show made it clear Jamie and Claire wouldn’t be back in time
It was clear on Outlander Season 4, Episode 10 Claire and Jamie wouldn’t get back in time for the birth
Many book readers were disappointed that Claire and Jamie weren’t there for Jemmy’s birth in the Outlander Season 4 finale. However, Outlander Season 4, Episode 10 made it very clear that wasn’t going to happen.
Now, I’ll admit that I’m not one of those book readers disappointed with Claire and Jamie not being there. We all find something different to connect to in the books. That moment in the cabin just wasn’t a favorite of mine.
I also go into a show adaptation with an open mind. While there are favorite moments in the books, I never expect them to make it to the show. I go with the flow, seeing how the writers are able to transform epic novels into epic TV shows.
But, I was also aware from the statements in Outlander Season 4, Episode 10 that Claire and Jamie were never going to make it back in time.
Brianna would have given birth during the journey
Bree wanted to go with Claire and Jamie to get Roger back from the Mohawk. The TV show needed a legitimate reason why she couldn’t go, and this Brianna wouldn’t have likely taken “you’re pregnant” as a sole reason.
Instead, the writers added in that if she went with them, she’d likely give birth on the way back. That was because of how far away the Mohawk were. It would take months to get there and months to return on horseback.
With that, the show made it very clear not to expect the scene with Jamie holding Bree and Claire delivering her grandson on the series. Claire and Jame weren’t going to make it back in time.
I picked up on that right away and wondered if the show was going to find some way to change the way time works just to get everyone back there for the birth.
There was also no fear of death in pregnancy
Throughout the books, Brianna always had a fear that she would die giving birth. To be honest, it wasn’t a fear I could really connect with. But then again, I don’t connect with a lot of people’s fears and anxieties, the way that people don’t connect with mine. I can sympathize but not necessarily completely understand.
I also look at it as a woman who did almost die giving birth to my first child. That was in a sterilized hospital in 2012. It doesn’t really matter the time period someone is in. Death during childbirth is still far too common.
So, I never really understood why Bree had this fear only because she was in the past.
Outlander Season 4 completely did away with that fear. Instead, we got to see Brianna as this strong woman, delivering her baby with just those she had come to trust over the course of a few months—mostly Lizzie and Phaedre.
I do think the comment about Claire and Jamie taking months to get to Roger was a hint that all this was to come. They wouldn’t make it back and Brianna would find the strength to do it herself.
