Diana Gabaldon is writing an Outlander prequel and has confirmed Murtagh will be a part of it
Outlander fans miss Murtagh. Whether it’s in the books, where he died at Culloden, or in the show, where he died at the Battle of Alamance, Jamie’s dour godfather is a lovable presence. Fortunately, Diana Gabaldon will write for him once more in her forthcoming Outlander prequel.
What about Bees? Don’t worry. She’s working on it. As she told a fan on Twitter, she often works on more than one book at once, depending on which one speaks to her at any given moment.
As reported in Town & Country, the prequel book will tell the story of Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, Jamie’s parents. We know that the couple had a passionate romance that angered both of their families, not to mention Ellen’s many suitors.
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser always loved Ellen MacKenzie and swore to protect her son
Diana Gabaldon revealed in a tweet that Murtagh would grace the pages of her prequel. A fan had said she hoped to see him again so Diana told her she would.
It makes a lot of sense for Murtagh to show up in the story of Brian and Ellen. He was one of several men in love with Ellen and gave her bracelets made from the tusks of a boar he killed at the Gathering where she ran away with Brian.
He also played a part in their lives after they got married. They named him Jamie’s godfather, after all, and he swore an oath to Ellen that he would always protect his godson – an oath that he kept till the day he died in both versions of the story.
We have no idea when we’ll actually see the prequel since Diana has several books in the pipeline and insists in writing them out of order, but someday we’ll get to meet the fiery Ellen MacKenzie and learn more about her romance with Brian Fraser. I look forward to seeing their scenes with Murtagh as well.
