Droughtlander suggestions: Could The Wilds give you something to watch?
Check out The Wilds to get through this long Droughtlander
As we continue through this long Droughtlander, it’s worth giving new TV shows a try. The Wilds is the newest Amazon Original Series, and it’s certainly worth Outlander fans considering.
This has nothing to do with time travel. It doesn’t have a romance like Claire and Jamie. However, it’s an excellently written series with a lot of character development, death, and a mystery that you’ll want to figure out throughout the series. It’s a binge-worthy show that leaves you needing more.
So, if it doesn’t have the romance that Claire and Jamie offers on Outlander, why is it a Droughtlander recommendation? Let’s get into it.
What is The Wilds about?
The series has been dubbed another LOST, but it’s far more than that. It’s a gender-swapped Lord of the Flies, but there’s a bigger conspiracy for the eight teenage girls on the island to figure out. They just don’t know they need to figure it out.
We get to see the conspiracy play out because we do spend time off the island. We get to know who the Dawn of Eve is and what the group wants, although I’ll leave you to watch the series to figure it all out.
The series is a survival story with a coming-of-age element. The eight teenagers stranded on an island have to learn how to cope without adults around. They need to figure out how to get along when they all come from different backgrounds and have a few mental health problems that may or may not be undiagnosed.
We do get flashes of time. We see them rescued, get to know their stories before the island, and see them on the island. It’s all easy to follow, though, due to clothing and locations.
If you like survival dramas and you love well-written coming-of-age stories with diverse characters, The Wilds is most definitely for you.
Why watch the series as an Outlander fan
But there’s no Claire and Jamie romance! How can it possibly be something for Droughtlander.
Honestly, if it’s the Claire and Jamie romance that you want—if that’s the only reason you watch Outlander—then this series isn’t for you. For those who love Outlander for the dramatic storylines, for some of the survival elements, for the character development of others outside of the Frasers, then you’ll want to check out The Wilds.
There is a sort of romance between two of the girls that plays out. One of them is a closeted lesbian and she’s trying to figure herself out, but what happens when you put her with someone who is proud to be who she is?
This series offers diverse characters in terms of backgrounds and ethnicities. We experience some of the life on the reservations (although I hope The Wilds Season 2 goes into more of that). There’s a chance to see an athlete push her body and mind to the max, damaging herself in the process. We get to see a young girl who spends her whole time looking after her terminally ill father and has to deal with his loss.
Then there’s Leah, who is dealing with a breakup. This is more than an everyday teenage breakup. It’s her first love, and I think we can all remember how hard it was to break up with our first love.
Being a teenage girl is hard. These eight offer us a remind of that.
But within all that is the conspiracy. What’s really going on with the Dawn of Eve? What really happened on the island? Across 10 episodes, we get some of the answers. It’s the well-paced writing and the clues that make this show such a binge-worthy option. The downside is there are only 10 episodes (so far).
