Outlander Season 4, Episode 6: Clearing the air between Claire and Lord John Grey
Outlander Season 4, Episode 6 gave Claire and Lord John Grey time to clear the air
Outlander Season 4, Episode 6 aired for the first time on this day in 2018. It’s an episode that sees Jamie spend time with William, but an important part of the story is Claire and Lord John Grey clearing the air.
Lord John and Claire aren’t exactly the best of friends. They’re jealous of each other, although I’ve never really understood Claire’s jealousy. She knows Lord John’s feelings for Jamie, but there is no need for her ever to feel threatened. That doesn’t mean they need to be best friends, but there’s no need for Claire’s hostility toward him.
This episode gave her a chance to understand Lord John a little more. She had a chance to find a connection to him, and it’s important for the rest of the story. Whether the show follows through with a particular marriage or not, just seeing the two respect one another and not be so hostile is important for the story.
Claire and Lord John have a lot in common
It’s easy to assume that Claire has had everything she could ever want. Lord John makes the assumption that Claire has never wanted something she can’t have; that she’s never had to live a lie for the sake of other people or pretenses.
And yet she has. Claire soon realizes that her life with Frank has been very much like Lord John’s need to live a life that isn’t really for him. He has to pretend to be heterosexual when he would love nothing more to be who he really is. While he can be a dutiful husband in all ways, he has to continue to keep a part of him hidden from society.
Meanwhile, Claire had to keep her love for Jamie hidden, buried deep throughout her time in the 20th century. She put on a face, pretend to be in love with Frank, even though she fooled very few people. She and Frank could never find their way back to each other with Jamie always there in her heart.
A mutual respect on Outlander Season 4, Episode 6
In the end, the two come to a mutual understanding. They gain a new respect for each other that they should have probably had in the past. At least, Claire should have had.
In fact, during Outlander Season 3, Episode 12, there is a hint that a friendship could have been possible. It’s only when Claire sees the sapphire and realizes what Jamie really means to John that her attitude changes. She becomes jealous for no reason.
She finally realizes that John is just like her and Frank’s relationship. In this moment, Lord John has opened up in a way that he hasn’t to anyone else, making it clear that he trusts her confidence. He trusts her character. And that’s something that will possibly come to play later.
If what plays out in the books happens on Outlander at some point, this episode is crucial to make it possible and realistic.
