Mr. Willoughby tells his story in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 45

As the crew tell stories on the Artemis to pass the time, the attention turns to Mr. Willoughby. It’s time to find out why he left China in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 45.

I did appreciate getting to know more about Mr. Willoughby in this chapter. There is a mean streak to him, but I actually can’t blame him for that mean streak. He’s angry at what he’s had to suffer just so he didn’t have to become a eunuch. Not only has he left his home, but he’s dishonored his whole family.

I’m more disappointed, again, in Claire’s reaction. Or should I say, lack of reaction. I’ll get to that as I breakdown the chapter.

Mr. Willoughby did tell some of his tale during Outlander Season 3. The reason for telling the story was different, but the story was mostly the same. The way he told it was different, though. He didn’t need to get Jamie to tell the tale in the series, and I do think that worked better for the show. I’ll explain more in that section of the breakdown.

This is a relatively short chapter, coming in at less than 20 minutes on Audible. However, that doesn’t stop it from being an important chapter for a side character.

Let’s get into the breakdown of Voyager Chapter 45.
