Shark killing and pelican catching take place in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 44

The voyage across the seas continues in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 44. Rather than skipping over it, we see what the sailors get up to. At the same time, Mr. Willoughby causes a scene.

This chapter has a lot going on. It all starts with feeling some regrets and ends with a moment about culture. There are moments that make me cringe during this, especially Claire’s thoughts about Mr. Willoughby, but there are also moments that I really enjoy.

One of my favorite moments is Mr. Willoughby diving into the water and Jamie going in after him. The Chineseman is just so focused on the one thing he needs to do, and it’s such a hilarious and dramatic moment, but it also gives us an insight into Mr. Willoughby’s method of thinking. Guys like him are crazy and dangerous but smart at the same time.

It’s not a chapter that was used for the TV show. I do actually think some of this could have been used, but I’ll go into my suspicions as to why it wasn’t when I get to the adaptation part of the post.

There was also a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s not the first time this bit of foreshadowing has been included in the books.

The chapter is a little longer than the last couple, taking us back up to around the 50-minute mark. Let’s dive into Voyager Chapter 44.
