Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t that much foreshadowing in the chapter since the focus is on Duncan and the smugglers. However, there is a little when it comes to the arm.

This is something that comes up later. Duncan later marries Jocasta, and it looks like he is only after her for money. However, we see here that he is a good man. He doesn’t want for much, which suggests that it is love that he wants.

That doesn’t stop him thinking about how others look at him. It doesn’t stop him thinking about how his marriage looks. And it doesn’t stop him worrying about whether he is the right match for Jocasta at the time.

I also think this sets up Duncan being a bigger figure in the lives of the Frasers moving forward. Claire realizes that she can trust him. There’s no way he could be the traitor.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

This chapter wasn’t used. I’m surprised a mention of the diets of the sailors wasn’t at least mentioned by Claire, but this chapter just wasn’t important for the overall story the show wanted to tell on Outlander Season 3.

The traitor storyline wasn’t part of it. We didn’t have Duncan Innes with the crew. With so little time to tell a tale, the journey across the water needed to be kept short.

Bringing in this story would have meant some other storylines, later on, would be needed. It wouldn’t work for the show-first fans to include some of this chapter and then nothing that this chapter builds up to.

Was it a shame we didn’t get to know Duncan Innes on the show? Yes, but that’s the way adaptations go. We’ve got to know so many other characters and in different ways. I love how John Quincy Myers has been adapted and I adored getting to know Lesley and Hayes a bit more on the voyage. So, I’m going to take the loss of Duncan on the chin, because I wouldn’t want to give up what we did get. We get Duncan in the books, so it’s not like we’ve lost him completely.
