Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t too much in the way of foreshadowing in Voyager Chapter 42. This chapter is more about Claire and Jamie reconnecting, a chance for quiet before everything that is to come.

However, I do spot a very little amount of foreshadowing in the letter. Claire advises Bree not to try to change a man, and that men will try to change women but not to let that happen. This is foreshadowing things to come with Roger.

There are times Roger tries to change Brianna and vice versa. The two want different things for a time, and part of that will be due to their age gap as well as upbringing. However, in the end, they realize that they can’t change each other and they love each other for just who they are.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

The chapter was partly adapted for Outlander Season 3, Episode 9. There was the chance for Claire and Jamie to steal a little time alone, a chance to reconnect and talk about Brianna.

The topic was slightly different, though. Part of that would have been due to the way Claire left in the show compared to the book. Claire didn’t leave for Boston on her own. Claire and Bree both headed there and Roger joined them. This meant the letter wasn’t as important.

We also didn’t get the moment with the photos. The bikini photo was included in an earlier episode, and Jamie took the time to look at the photos in the following episode. So, the show’s writers opted to include the book Goodnight, Moon and the talk of Bree’s favorite cuddly toy.

There wasn’t much time to spend on this moment. There is a longer bit that was deleted before the graphics were added in, but it’s these quieter moments that are removed in favor of the drama. So, the conversation had to be more contained, and I think that’s why a quick mention of Bree’s favorite book and toy were used.

The moment still allowed Jamie to learn a little more about his daughter. It also took out things that were a little harder to explain, such as clothing choices and the freedom to marry for love. While Jamie didn’t know the book, he didn’t need too much explanation of what it was. Just the knowledge that it was Bree’s favorite book was all that mattered.

It was still a great moment on the show. And I love that we have two slightly different moments that mean the same thing. They’re both about Jamie and Claire reconnecting, and that’s the important thing for me.
