Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Young Ian swimming out to sea. Jamie tells him to allow the current to do its work, which would be fine if there wasn’t a ship in the water.

Young Ian is taken by a smaller boat, and Jamie and Claire see that there’s a bigger ship the small boat is riding to. Young Ian is taken there, and that means they’re not going to kill him…yet.

However, the two have to take cover. The ship starts shooting at them, making it clear they’re not going to make it easy to get Young Ian back. Right now, nobody has any idea why the ship is shooting at them or why the crew has taken Young Ian. That’s something to come up later in the book.

Claire questions whether the name of the ship was written on the side. Why would anyone put the name of the ship on the side of it? It turns out this is just some modern thing to do. Jamie points out that all ships look unique. While he doesn’t know which ship it was, he can describe it well and someone will know. Jared Fraser may even know.

And that’s where they’re going. They were going to leave for France anyway, but now they definitely need to. They need Jared’s help getting Young Ian back.

Before they can ride off, there’s a chance for a little intimacy. Jamie questions whether this is a punishment for wanting Claire so much. Maybe he should have let her go, but he wants a life with Claire at Lallybroch.

Claire points out that they’re married, and this is not a punishment. They will get Young Ian back.
