Claire’s standout moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 10

Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 aired for the first time on this day three years ago. While it’s a debated episode (especially when it comes to Jamie), it’s one of my favorites for emotion and Claire’s strength.

This is the episode that sees Claire fight hard to save men dying from typhoid. She wants to save as many as possible but is also realistic. The aim is to prevent it from spreading further.

It’s time to look back at the episode. Here are Claire’s best moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 10.

Not standing down against the men

Claire won’t be all that unaccustomed to men speaking out against her or men doubting her. She was a surgeon at a time when women had only just been allowed to go to school to become a doctor. She was routinely having to prove herself, and this was just another one of those times.

Claire remained focused throughout the episode. She knew she had men to save and how to do it. She didn’t care if anyone wanted to trust her or follow her orders. Fortunately, she had Elias Pound to give the orders when necessary and she quickly proved to many men that she was capable.

The discussion of compartmentalizing

There’s a moment where Elias Pound asks how Claire is able to focus on her work. She compartmentalizes a lot, something that she likely learned to do during the Second World War. If you focus so much on the people you’ve lost, you can’t save anyone.

However, she’s not judgemental of Elias not being able to do that. Not only is he young and inexperienced, but one of the deaths was a friend of his. She admits that none of the deaths have been close to her.

Her praise for Elias Pound

We get to see the motherly side to Claire throughout Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 thanks to her time with Elias. She gets to know him, teaches him about hygiene, but also offers him praise when he needs it.

Sometimes the writing is inconsistent with Claire. She can be so against superstitions during Outlander Season 3, Episode 9, but she doesn’t say anything about Elias keeping the rabbit’s foot. Maybe it’s because it’s more about a connection to his late mother than the superstition, but I’m really glad we see a caring side to her during this episode.

I do wish the writing could be more consistent, though.

Her connection to Anneka

Claire very quickly gains a connection with Anneka, the woman who milks the goats. She’s a necessary part of the ship’s crew, and not just for the men. She’s needed to help Claire.

Claire is able to open up to this woman she doesn’t even know. She shares that she needs to get to her husband so he’s not executed, and Anneka finds a way to do that. Claire has no idea what “my goats need grass” means, or that Anneka literally means her goats need grass. That doesn’t matter. It’s all about this quick connection that forms, proving once again Claire needs a female friend.

Taking the leap of faith

Finally, it all comes down to the end. After losing Elias but winning the battle against typhoid, Claire can only worry about Jamie. Her escape attempt on the island was thwarted, and she knows the captain will deliver the information he has.

Now she needs to find another way to get to Jamie. There’s only one thing she can do. Trust in the current and take a leap of faith off the boat.
