Droughtlander suggestions: The Nevers will be on HBO in Spring 2021
The Nevers, starring Laura Donnelly, marks Joss Whedon’s return to television
The mind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly is back to TV as the showrunner of The Nevers, a new Victorian supernatural drama. The main character is played by Laura Donnelly, Outlander’s own Jenny Murray.
Winter is Coming reports that the show “revolves around a group of women in Victorian England ‘who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.'” That certainly sounds promising, as we in the Outlander fandom appreciate strong female characters.
It was series star Denis O’Hare who revealed the Spring 2021 air date on HBO. He and Nick Frost both suggested that the first season may be split into two parts due to the pandemic.
Cast of The Nevers excited about the show, which is different from Whedon’s earlier work
In addition to Donnelly, O’Hare, and Frost, the cast includes Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, and Poldark’s Eleanor Tomlinson.
Laura Donnelly is Amalia True: “The most reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged hero of her time. A menace to stuffy Victorian society, she would die for the cause and kill for a drink.” She’s definitely got the attitude to pull off that role, if Jenny is any indication.
Nick Frost spoke to Collider about The Nevers:
"It looks [expletive] crazy. It looks amazing. I think the script is fantastic. My character’s like a serial lunatic. […] But I love it. I love the character, and I think people are just gonna [expletive] love it. It’s complicated and it’s fresh."
As good as his Avengers films were, I’ve been a fan of Joss Whedon’s work since the Buffy days so I’m looking forward to his jump back into television and the supernatural genre. I hope the show is as fresh and complicated as Frost promised.
