Outlander pops up on This Is Us

Outlander obsession gets a mainstream mention on NBC’s This Is Us

You know that feeling when an old friend mentions your favorite show when you didn’t even know they knew it existed? I had that feeling on Tuesday night when Madison mentioned Outlander on This Is Us.

Outlander is becoming more popular all the time and more prevalent in popular culture. I’ve seen it in clues on Jeopardy. It showed up in the latest series of Amazon Prime’s The Boys. The time-travel series is definitely making a name for itself.

Characters Kevin and Madison, who are newly engaged after Madison got pregnant with twins in a one-night stand, are having a serious discussion about the baggage they bring to the relationship and what they might pass on to their children. Outlander comes up in a much-needed moment of humor as one of those things Madison needs to “confess.”

Kevin and Madison barely know each other, despite their engagement. Both have struggles with body image. Kevin’s stem from his career as a popular actor and his need to keep in perfect shape for his roles. Madison has struggled with bulimia and is having difficulty with the need to eat more for her growing children. During their heart-to-heart Madison admits:

"Madison: Also, I am obsessed with the show Outlander.  I’ve gone to conventions.Kevin: No.Madison: Yeah.Kevin: You’re one of those people.Madison: Yeah. One of those people. I know."

It’s okay, Madison. You’re one of us, and that’s no bad thing to be!

Lots of fans have been reacting to the mention. On Nov. 11, the cast and crew have joined in the fun on Twitter. Maril Davis, Steven Cree, Sam Heughan, and even Caitriona Balfe have all mentioned the clip.
