Outlander Book Club: Voyager Chapter 33 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
Let’s get into the foreshadowing within this chapter. It all starts with Jamie describing Young Ian. He is stubborn, and we’ll get to see more of that coming up. Young Ian’s stubbornness is partly the reason why he remains in the New World. He becomes part of a Native tribe.
However, the stubbornness does mellow out a little. The beating he had to give does help him see the world a little more clearly. He understands more about how his actions affect others, and it helps him become the man of worth he is going to become.
The real bit of foreshadowing is the discussion about the gold. Jamie knows it wasn’t gold from France. It wasn’t the right type of gold to be from Louis. Nobody really brings it up, but it’s all about the gemstones.
All this gold is going to link back to Geillis, and get ready for it all to be a more important part of Voyager than you ever expected.
And there is a link to Lord John Grey. Remember that Jamie gave John one of the gemstones he took. That will play a part in the upcoming books.
Adapting the Voyager chapter
This chapter was partly adapted for Outlander Season 3. I don’t remember the baboon part, mostly because Jamie hadn’t received a beating from Young Ian. Jamie had another way of dealing with that situation.
The part that comes up clearly is Jamie’s story of the gold and believing Claire to be on the island. It’s a chance for openness and honesty, something that the two need after being separated for so long. Within this part, there’s hope that the two will sort out their differences.
You see, it wasn’t really the story for me. While I loved learning why Jamie tried to escape and why he returned, it was about the honesty between the Frasers. For me, it was the connection that was growing.
Sadly, there wasn’t the time to continue that connection growth. That was when the “Daddy?” part came into the series. Oh, what a shock that was! Lauren Lyle was perfect as Marsali in this scene, and you just know that Laoghaire was the one that coached Marsali to do this. Lyle picked up on so many of Nell Hudson’s looks during Outlander Season 3.
