Outlander Book Club: Voyager Chapter 31 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
I’ll admit that I’m at a hazy part of the books. A lot of storylines tend to run into one for me, so I can’t remember if this moment leads to anything. Someone who has read this book more recently will be able to help here, I’m sure.
There is a bigger thing with Sir Percival, but I’m not sure how much foreshadowing of that storyline is in this chapter.
However, I think there is an element of foreshadowing here. Jamie is always going to put his men’s needs first. He offers to give them money if they need it even though he can’t pay everything he wanted to. This is something that continues as everyone moves to Fraser’s Ridge.
I think it also foreshadows Young Ian being separated from the others. In this case, he went off to the abbey to warn everyone, although ended up going the wrong way. Later in the story, he trades himself for Roger, heading to a life with the Natives. He does return though, just like he does in this chapter.
Adapting the Voyager chapter
This wasn’t a chapter adapted in Outlander Season 3. It could have been good for part of an episode, but there just wasn’t enough time on the series. This part of the book wasn’t the most important for the overall story. The problem with the smuggling business was written into Outlander Season 3, Episode 7 when the exciseman was at the brothel.
This chapter was just about closing off this part of the story. The focus was moving on to returning to Lallybroch, and that was certainly needed in the show. We’ll be getting into that tomorrow.
