Outlander Book Club: Voyager Chapter 28 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
Jamie and Claire discuss who the seaman who worked his way to the print shop could have been. This could have been someone Sir Percival was warning Jamie about. In the previous chapter, Percival had said not to go north because of the weather, but Jamie was sure it was a warning about something else.
What was the seaman looking for? Well, the man may have been a rival smuggler. That would help to understand how he knew Jamie’s smuggling name. However, this man knew about the print shop, which is under the name Alec Malcolm.
Even Sir Percival doesn’t know all of Jamie’s aliases. He knows Jamie as Mr. Malcolm and believes Jamie smuggles in furs because of how he pays Percival off. This is someone who could connect all of Jamie’s businesses.
The smuggler isn’t just a normal smuggler, either. He smelled the brandy and only tasted in the odd places. There are some people who can tell where a brandy comes from just by the smell. The taste tells these people the year it was made. And the only places the seaman tasted the brandy was where Jamie has an exclusivity clause. It’s something concerning.
Fergus cuts off the conversation. He’s managed to get rid of the stored brandy, although at a lower profit than normal.
What about the body of the man Mr. Willoughby killed? That person was in a casket of Creme de Menthe sold with the brandy. Nobody will drink Creme de Menthe so the body shouldn’t be found.
We end with everyone retiring for the night. Fergus is looking for his favorite girl at the brothel and he and Madame Jeanne find a woman for Young Ian. Jamie doesn’t like the idea of this and is shocked to find out his other nephews lost their virginity in the brothel. Jamie doesn’t put up much of a fight, though.
Young Ian goes off with a woman, leaving Jamie and Claire in their room alone.
