A look at the Outlander age rating, and why it is what it is

The Outlander books and TV show both have a loyal following. Fans come from all backgrounds and ages, but one thing in common. Many want to know if they can watch with their children or let their kids read the series. What is the Outlander age rating?

We’re going to split this into two sections: the book and the show. The TV series is probably for the older side, but it will depend on the imagination of the child and the maturity of them.

Neither are good for younger children. Not only is the content too old for them, but the books are on the long and detailed side. It’s best to stick with the 9+ or the 13+ sections for now. As they get older, you may be able to introduce them to the series. It depends on if you want to keep something for yourself.

What is the Outlander age rating for the books? The majority of books don’t come with specific age ratings. However, they are placed in sections in book stores that are deemed suitable for readers.

The novels are usually in the adult reading section. Sometimes, they’ll be in the fantasy section and sometimes they’re in the romance. It depends on what the store has categorized the books as for the customers who come into the store.

You won’t find them in the teen or young adult sections though. The content is on the descriptive side, including when it comes to some of the more torturous sections.

Most adults are saying 16 is the youngest a child should be to read the books. It is going to depend on the maturity, though.

What about the show? This is much easier to set. It’s TV-MA in the United States, according to the Parents Guide on IMDb. Netflix brings it up as TV-MA because of the content, too.

TV-MA means that it’s for 18+. There is mature subject matter in the episodes.

Other parts of the world are different. In Quebec, Canada, it’s 13+, in Australia it’s ratings MA15+, and in the UK it’s rated 18. Some episodes will get a lower rating while others get a higher one, depending on the exact content within them.

There is a lot of nudity, especially in the earlier episodes. There’s a lot of foul language (although nothing compared to The Boys), and there’s a hell of a lot of violence. I do feel like the last two episodes of Outlander Season 1 are brought up the most, and they are horrific. However, there are moments in all seasons that will make people turn away and not watch the episode again.

Parents need to make their own decision based on the maturity of their children. No judgment here, but the official Outlander age rating is TV-MA.
