Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter is so in the moment that I don’t spot that much in the way of foreshadowing. Maybe there’s some in the way that Claire will have to plan ahead to ensure they all remain nutritious now that she’s in the past when seeing the mother, but most of the chapter is focused on finding Jamie and then telling him all about Brianna.

I think the biggest thing is probably the way she says that they’re still married. We know now that Jamie married again, and Claire returning will cause some problems there.

We also hear the name Mr. Willoughby. It’s not really foreshadowing, but get ready for him to become a bigger part of Voyager.

Adapting the Voyager chapter

Most of the start of this chapter was skipped over. We didn’t need to see Claire go through the stones and find her way to Edinburgh. With so little time on the show, opting to put her straight in 1766’s Edinburgh was the best thing to do. The rest could be left up to our imagination, whether we’d read the books or not.

For the most part, this chapter was used exactly in the show. There were a few subtle changes, but most of it was the same. We got the embarrassment and the nervousness between the two.

One of the photos in the show wasn’t in the book. Claire brought one back of Brianna in a bikini, which has certainly made many fans angry. How dare Claire bring something back that she knows Jamie wouldn’t like! Claire makes a comment later in the episode about how she forgot how rigid the century was, which does connect back to the photo.

Another change, and one that I adored, was how Faith was mentioned when Claire described Brianna’s red hair. I often feel like Faith is forgotten about, but a stillborn baby is never forgotten about, even back then. The episode then included Willie. I disliked that Jamie didn’t tell Claire about Willie (or Laoghaire) right away, so I was glad the show changed one of those things.

Maybe part of me understands why he kept the Laoghaire problem a secret. I’ve known men who think they can deal with it and then eventually have to tell the truth. However, keeping Willie a secret never made sense. Even after 20 years, surely he knew he’d be able to trust Claire with something like that.

And we’ll end it there for the week. You’ve got the weekend to enjoy Claire and Jamie’s reunion.
