Claire asks Joe a question and a favor in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 20

Claire heads back to work during Outlander Book 3, Chapter 20. Her return is more about seeing Joe than anything else, but we do get something that foreshadows the ending to the novel.

This is the chapter where Claire makes up her mind. Now that she knows Jamie is alive somewhere in the 1760s, she knows that she needs to go back to him. The last few chapters have seen her get ready to go back to the past, but I feel like this is the chapter that really cements it. After all, it ends with her closing the door on her life in the 1960s.

While it is a chapter that was used in the series, it was broken up in a different way. I’ll get into why I think that happened and why it was important in the adaptation section of the post. I do think the TV writers did the right thing based on elements that were missing from Joe and Claire’s friendship in the buildup to Claire leaving.

This chapter also included foreshadowing. We just wouldn’t realize that the bones would come up until further into the story.

It’s time to break down the Voyager chapter.
