Claire heads back to Boston in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 18
Claire is on the flight back to Boston in Outlander Book 3, Chapter 18. She’s left Brianna in Scotland with Roger, where they can continue their search for Jamie.
This chapter includes a flashback to Claire’s time as a doctor. We see her and Joe’s friendship, which only started as a mutual knowledge that they were the outcasts in their medical class. It took some time for them to create the bond we see later on.
We also find out why Joe calls Claire Lady Jane. It was a nickname used on the show but isn’t explained in the season. I guess we can just accept that it’s Joe’s nickname, but the chapter of the book has the time to go into the reason why he uses this nickname. And it’s important for the next chapter in the story.
While we needed to see Claire and Joe’s bond, this chapter wasn’t used for the series. However, there are elements of the chapter included here and there in flashes, including in one of the title cards for Outlander Season 5.
It’s certainly a chapter on the shorter side, coming in at less than 20 minutes on Audible. However, it’s a good chapter to know more about Claire and Joe’s bond.
