Claire’s strongest moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 5

Claire may have given up the search, but Roger hadn’t. He appeared in Boston during Outlander Season 3, Episode 5 with some excellent news.

While Claire didn’t originally react well, she eventually made the decision to go back to the past. It was time to reunite with Jamie. But first, there were things to put together.

Here are my favorite Claire moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 5.

Seeing her in her element

The start of the episode opens with Claire in surgery. The patient’s blood pressure is dropping and Joe thinks the best thing to do is pad her up and close for now. Claire has other ideas.

We see her in her element. She’s at her best when saving lives, and I do think this is foreshadowing for the need to save her attacker’s life two episodes later. It prepared us for this headstrong surgeon who won’t give up on a patient.

A defensive reaction to the news

Roger turns up in Boston with news that he’s found Jamie. There are a lot of things that point to Roger being right, which leads to Claire’s defensive reaction. She’s not happy that she knows Jamie is alive somewhere in the past. That means making a difficult choice.

It’s such a human reaction. She’d given up the search, believing him to be dead and gone. She could handle that, but how could she handle knowing that she could get to her soulmate but it would mean leaving her daughter behind?

Telling Bree how much she loved her daughter

After the memorial at the university, Claire and Brianna have the chance to talk about what Claire will do now. Something that Bree is struggling with is the idea that Frank hated her. Bree would have reminded him that she was another man’s daughter. And she fears Claire resented her because she reminded Claire of Jamie.

It leads to a beautiful moment between mother and daughter. Claire makes it very clear that the minute she gave birth to Bree, she loved her daughter. Claire realized what her daughter needed in this moment, and that’s exactly what she offered.

Asking Joe if she was sexually attractive

There are always some amusing moments during the books and series. Outlander Season 3, Episode 5 offered that when Claire asked Joe if she was sexually attractive. He wasn’t sure how to take it at first.

Their friendship is so strong. I still wish we’d got to see more of their bond grow throughout the first half of the season, but this moment and the moment she tells Joe that Frank wasn’t Bree’s biological father shows the strength of their friendship. He eventually answers, realizing that he’s not being set up to be punked in some way.

Giving Bree the pearls

My final favorite moment is another between Claire and Brianna. Claire has made the bat dress and she’s ready for her trip. There’s one thing she has to do first. She gives Brianna Ellen’s pearls.

They are important later in the books, but for the series, they’re just this beautiful moment between mother and daughter. They signal the mourning both mother and daughter will do as they are separated by time. But they also remind us that Claire wants Bree to be proud of her real heritage, even if she can’t talk to anyone but Roger about it.
