The latest Outlander Book 9 Daily Lines post is from Claire’s perspective

Diana Gabaldon shared another Outlander Book 9 Daily Lines post this week. It brings up the question of whether houses are alive.

One thing that Outlander has always been able to do is bring up some philosophical thoughts. My favorite has been the discussion about whether dogs go to heaven, with Jemmy having the best answer to the entire debate.

This chapter doesn’t involve the children. Well, the littlest children. It’s all about Claire and Fanny (and Bluebell the dog).

Wait, Bluebell? If you haven’t read some of the more recent books, you will have missed the storyline with Bluey (nickname) coming into the family. I’ll leave you to read to find out more. This is all about the most recent Daily Lines post and the dog isn’t all that important.

Are houses alive?

Fanny and Claire are alone in the Big House. Everyone else has gone elsewhere, although the snippet doesn’t tell us where. Again, that’s not really important for the discussion that happens in the chapter. It’s more just setting the scene that they are alone.

Young Fanny questions whether houses are alive. Claire thinks so. After all, people take in a part of where they live, so wouldn’t the houses take a part of the people who live there?

It’s an interesting thought. We often dismiss the idea of inanimate objects being alive, but then there are all these stories of marks being left on houses by previous owners. There are talks of how people will haunt specific places they lived or died. In this sense, houses could be alive.

There is a slightly darker element to the thoughts when it moves onto where Fanny came to the Frasers from. I’ll leave you with the Outander Book 9 Daily Lines post below to read it:
