During the wedding, Jocasta wants to speak with Roger. Naturally, it’s to bring up the fact that she doesn’t know who he is or where he’s come from. She has no idea who his family is and Roger seems to have no money. It looks like he is only marrying Brianna for her wealth and her inheritance.

However, it’s clear there’s more to her discussion with Roger. Jocasta is always one step ahead of people. She manipulates, and this is one of those great moments. She’s waiting to see how Roger will react, and his reaction makes it clear to her that Brianna has chosen a man who loves her.

At least, that’s the way I understand the scene from the show.

Choosing Duncan over Murtagh

In the end, Jocasta has no choice but to choose Duncan over Murtagh. It’s not that she loves Duncan more, but that he is the safest choice.

However, there’s a huge reason that I love this moment so much. We see the sorrow and the heartbreak. Maria Doyle Kennedy gives an outstanding performance in the scene. She shows the fear of Murtagh’s cause, knowing the loss that is to come.

At the same time, she shows this need for Murtagh to do as he wishes. She knows that she can’t stop him, but she won’t lose anyone else after everything she lost because of the Jacobite rebellion.
