Claire’s standout moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 2

Part of me wishes that we could have had a little more time with Claire and Jamie separated during Outlander Season 3. There was so much to cover over the space of 20 years, and I do feel like a lot of it was skipped over.

However, I’m grateful for the moments we did get. Outlander Season 3, Episode 2 gave us a look at Claire’s life in Boston, as she tried to connect with Frank but failed. She became a mother to Brianna, but there was something missing in her life, and it all led her back to medicine.

Here are my five favorite Claire moments from Outlander Season 3, Episode 2.

Thinking of Jamie

We open Claire’s part of the episode with her in bed with Frank. However, Frank is asleep, so she is left to her own devices doing something many women will do in their own beds. While she does it, she thinks of Jamie.

We’d just had a moment of Jamie thinking of Claire. They’re separated by the stones and were only with each other for a couple of years, but those years meant the world to them.

Trying to be with Frank

Despite thinking of Jamie, Claire does try to connect with Frank. Well, she tries to connect with him on a physical level. At no point do I believe she’s trying to connect with him on an emotional level throughout Outlander Season 3, Episode 2.

But she tries. She wants to do more than just live with Frank and parent their child together. It’s just not going to happen.

Choosing medicine

Something more than Jamie is missing in Claire’s life. This is the episode where she takes the steps to become a doctor. Harvard has started allowing women into the medical program, and she’s going to take the chance.

Of course, she’s up against everything. I’m surprised she didn’t expect to be up against it considering the way she was treated at the hospital during Bree’s birth and the statements from Frank’s boss in the premiere. Fortunately, she wasn’t about to let that put her off.

Striking up a friendship

She wasn’t the only outcast in the medical program. Joe Abernathy was the only Black man in the classroom, and equally hated for it. Well, Joe saw a comfort in another outcast in the room and took the chance that Claire wasn’t a racist.

Claire gleefully struck up a friendship with Joe. This is part of why I wish there was more time to explore the 20-year separation. I felt cheated out of this experience.

Separate beds

Claire and Frank couldn’t get past the fact that Jamie was still there in Claire’s heart. Instead of separating, though, with do something that many couples did in the time. They get separate beds to try to make it look like they are still together. It’s all for the sake of Brianna.

While we likely wouldn’t recommend it today, Frank knew that Claire leaving would likely mean him not getting to see Brianna and he loved her. Claire leaving also meant she wouldn’t have been able to get to medical school as easily. They needed each other, and this moment shows that to me.
