Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a lot going on in this chapter. I didn’t see that much in the way of foreshadowing.

The main thing that I do see is that the change of command in the British Army changes everything. There’s clearly to be a new boost of morale in the British Army, and there are certainly more numbers.

Other than that, it all comes back to Alex Randall. It’s clear that he is the one to make Frank’s birth possible. He and Mary are meant to be, even if it is a bittersweet story for them. This just continues to solidify the fact that Frank got his lineage wrong. However, we’re about to find out just how it all led back to Black Jack Randall.

Adapting the Dragonfly in Amber chapter

The TV show didn’t use this chapter much. Outlander Season 2 kept the storyline of the Lallybroch men deserting out of the show. It wasn’t until the Outlander Season 3 premiere that it happened, with Murtagh telling Jamie quickly that he saw the men home. They’re not in the fight.

This part of the story would have been skipped purely due to time. There wasn’t the time available to include every single little storyline, even if it would have shown the horrid state of Tollbooth Prison. It’s not like it had a major effect on the storyline.

Instead, Dougal showed up with just a small group of men and fought for Charles’s attention against Jamie. The Dougal written in the show probably wouldn’t have helped Jamie get his men out of prison unless there was something big in it for him.

The other part of the story adapted heavily was Mary Hawkins’s return. Claire did come across her, but it was in an apothecary instead of a pawn shop. Mary was looking for medicine and instantly took a disliking to Claire. She’d learned that Claire was the one to send Alex Randall home.

It was Mary who brought Claire to see Alex, though. That was how we found out that Alex was dying of TB, but also how we found out the truth about Frank’s lineage.
