Claire and Jamie pay a visit to Lord Lovat in Outlander Book 2, Chapter 40

It’s time to meet Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat in Outlander Book 2, Chapter 40. He immediately makes a bad first impression, and it’s not going to get much better.

We’re immediately given the impression that this man is only in life for himself. And the people around him copy his attitude a lot—or they’re just too scared to be anything different. However, Jamie knows the way to put some fear into his grandfather, which is brought up at the end of the chapter.

This is on the longer side than average. On Audible, it’s at a little more than an hour long. The next few chapters are at a more average length, but there are a couple more in Part Six that are more than an hour. They’re important chapters with plenty of detail.

And since this is such an important chapter, the show did use it. However, it’s important to note that there were some substantial changes to the timing and a few of the storylines. These changes make sense from a show-first or show-only perspective, something that the writers need to balance with the book-first fans.
