Black Jack Randall turns to Claire for help in Outlander Book 2, Chapter 38

When it comes to Black Jack Randall, we’d never expect him to seek out Claire for help. However, that’s exactly what he does in Outlander Book 2, Chapter 38.

Of course, he’s not seeking Claire for his own help. He’s seen doctors regarding the injury from the duel. This is all about his brother, a storyline we should have known would eventually come up in the rest of the story.

The chapter is on the longer side to normal, coming in at just short of an hour on Audible. However, it’s also an important chapter. This is setting up the events that will lead to Culloden being a failure for the Jacobites, although you may not see it all at first.

The importance of the chapter is in the conversation between Black Jack Randall and Claire. He has come to realize that while he can’t stand her, he needs her help. However, he’s not ashamed to torment her with talking to her about Wentworth Prison. It just shows the type of man he is.

As for the use of the chapter, this was only slightly used in the TV show. Black Jack Randall never turned to Claire for help with an bargain. Instead, it was all about finding Mary Hawkins again.

Here’s our breakdown of the Dragonfly in Amber chapter.
