Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

There is a little foreshadowing within this chapter. The first is the foreshadowing of another child. We know another child will happen since we already have the chapters from 1968, but this is a good moment to share that Claire is positive that it will happen.

There’s also foreshadowing of Culloden. Claire thinks during the chapter about the pardon Jamie received from King George. Jamie wanted to burn it, but Claire knows that they need to keep that letter. It’s the only proof they have, and she worries that someone will take Jamie away from her.

However, it’s foreshadowing of more trouble. Jamie’s name will be forged and he will be deemed a traitor once more. That pardon isn’t going to do anything to help him.

Finally, we get a bit of foreshadowing for The Fiery Cross. Ian manages with the loss of his leg, but he still needs to get on with things. He can’t let himself stop and rest, even though he needs it. We get this reminder that Jamie fears he’ll lose part of who he is if he loses his leg due to the snake bite later in the story. Does this scene set up that fear?

Adapting the Dragonfly in Amber chapter for the series

This wasn’t a chapter used in the show. There simply wasn’t enough time to add it all in. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

In a way, it’s a slower pace that wouldn’t work for an episode. The show needed to push into the Jacobite rebellion storyline, so little moments like this had to be put to one side. If it wasn’t absolutely necessary to make the story believable and sensible, then there’s nothing wrong with skipping it and moving forward.

I wish there was more time for it, but then, this is what the books are for. We get more time to delve into the quieter moments.
