Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t too much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s very much in the moment, teaching the Scots what to do with the potatoes. The foreshadowing is that the tenants at Lallybroch have hope during the drought that’s to come. They will be able to feed themselves thanks to Jenny and Ian listening to Claire’s advice.

Another element is that of Claire holding Wee Jamie. She’ll have a child and some grandchildren of her own. While she and Jamie has lost Faith, not all is over. They just have to hold on throughout the bad. Even though neither really know what’s to come in the future, especially for the two of them together, they just need to hold onto what they have because things will work out for them.

Adapting the Dragonfly in Amber chapter

This wasn’t a chapter used all that much on Outlander. There just wasn’t enough time to have these quieter moments, especially with Culloden just around the corner. The show needed to jump ahead to the moment Claire and Jamie have no choice but to join Charles Stuart in the Jacobite rebellion.

In a way, it is a shame that this chapter wasn’t used. I do wish that we could have had more time with Claire and Jamie at Lallybroch. The benefit of the book is time to have these slower-paced moments.

However, I don’t begrudge the show. I completely understand that due to time constraints, this part had to be skipped over. TV episodes need drama in each one, and this quiet part of the books wouldn’t have held the attention of show-first or show-only fans in the way it would have drawn in the book fans.

It wasn’t completely ignored. We did get to see some potatoes at Lallybroch, knowing that the family and tenants were safe for the drought to come.
