Claire thinks about her nomadic life in Outlander Book 2, Chapter 31

Outlander Book 2, Chapter 31 continues the calm before the storm. It’s a chance to take a breather before the battle we know is to come.

Throughout this chapter, Claire thinks about her nomadic life. She compares it to Jamie’s life, one that was pretty settled until everything that happened with Black Jack Randall before he met Claire. However, there is now a chance for Claire to call a place home.

Of course, we all know what is to come. Even if you haven’t read the book before or seen the season, you know from the opening chapters that the Battle of Culloden will happen. Claire won’t get a home in the 18th century with Jamie for quite some time.

While this chapter wasn’t used too much in the show, it wasn’t missed too much. My only disappointment is not seeing Claire and Jamie get some sort of calmness for an entire episode, but this chapter is mostly about the past events. There’s only a quick mention of the cellar for the potatoes, which also has Claire thinking about the past.

That being said, I do notice some foreshadowing within the chapter. There’s a thought of things to come in Drums of Autumn.

Let’s get into the breakdown of Outlander Book 2, Chapter 31.
