During Outlander Season 1, Episode 4, Geillis clearly knows more than she shares

It’s important to separate the books and the show when it comes to Geillis’s storyline on Outlander. For this reason, we’re focusing on Outlander Season 1, Episode 4, and what she seems to hint towards during her conversation with Claire. How much did she actually know?

During the episode, Geillis is waiting for Claire in the surgery, bringing the port Claire asked for. While there, she notes that Claire has a lot of food and suggests that Claire may be “eating for two.” However, Geillis also warns Claire that the Highlands aren’t safe for a woman, hinting that she knows Claire is going to run away during the Gathering.

Does Geillis know more about Claire?

Throughout the conversation, there’s this suggestion that Geillis knows more. It’s like she’s trying to get Claire to share a little more information, get this hint that Claire is a time traveler.

After all, we know that Geillis is a time traveler. While we don’t know that at this point in the story, we later find out that she traveled from 1968 with the hope of the Jacobites winning at Culloden.

Does Geillis know about Claire specifically? After all, Geillis traveled at a later date to Claire, and she specifically wanted to travel. Geillis did her research and would have likely come across the newspaper clipping of Claire.

Geillis wouldn’t have been 100% certain Claire was the Claire from the newspaper clipping, though. Claire’s face was turned away from the camera and she didn’t use the surname Randall. Geillis suspected this was the same woman (or at least, another time traveler), but had to play things carefully to get the information out.

Eventually, Geillis learns the full truth about Claire. She likely suspected it but didn’t know it for certain during “The Gathering.”
