Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There’s certainly plenty of foreshadowing within this chapter. If you’ve only see the show, this chapter can come as a surprise with Claire going to Louise’s home in the country. It will also come as a surprise with the Huguenots storyline.

However, this is where the foreshadowing is. At least, some of it. We learn a little more about Master Raymond. There are secrets he holds and he’s a man well traveled. He speaks multiple languages without the hint of an accent. We just get this little hint that there’s more to learn about this man.

And there’s the hint of what will come; a request that will be made. Claire will need to help the King determine if a couple of men are witches.

Another element of foreshadowing comes with Fergus’s storyline. There’s more to him than missing Jamie. He is hiding a dark secret, and Claire is going to eventually learn what happened to him.

Adapting the chapter for the TV series

This Dragonfly in Amber chapter was adapted heavily for the sake of the show. In fact, parts of it were completely skipped over. We had none of the Huguenots storyline at all.

Claire never went to Louise’s home to recover. Instead, she went straight to her own home. This would have likely been for the sake of time and cost. By getting Claire back to her own home in Paris right away, there was no need to source an extra location. That extra location would have cost more money and taken more time to get set up.

Louise’s role was at the hospital instead. It kept the time spent on this part down, allowing it all to fit into one episode. After all, there was half a season left and a lot of content to fit into the section back in Scotland. Everything to do with Faith and getting Jamie out of the Bastille had to fit into this one episode, so reducing the time spent on Claire’s recovery was necessary.

That didn’t take things away from the recovery. We saw Louise act as a friend. There was the chance to see Fergus suffer in silence for a while. The important parts of the story were included.
