5 best Claire moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 3
5 standout Claire moments from Outlander Season 1’s The Way Out
On Aug. 23, 2014, Outlander Season 1, Episode 3 aired for the first time. In our yearly look back this year, we continue to look at Claire’s best moments from the episode.
“The Way Out” saw Claire learn more about the justice system of the time, as well as what constituted as healing. She certainly made an enemy of Father Bain, as she proved that he didn’t know everything about the ailments of individuals. Maybe he even believed that she was from the devil because of her healing skills.
Here are my five favorite Claire moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 3.
Choosing to go to the front lines
The episode starts with Claire and Frank in the 20th century. They’re in uniform, with Frank seeing Claire off to the front lines. It was certainly the opposite way things usually worked, but that’s because Frank was in MI6 and Claire was heading off to the war as a nurse.
We got this look at the selfless woman that she is. All she wanted to do was make sure the soldiers going to war were looked after the best they could be. Otherwise, what was the point in remaining British?
Helping Colum’s pain
While in the past, Claire realized that she needed to prove that she wasn’t a spy. The best way to do that was to earn Colum’s trust. What better way to do that than to help ease his pain?
Colum didn’t argue against her massaging her back. He was very appreciative of it, especially when it definitely did relieve his pain in his legs. We got another chance to see she would put others first, even though there was an ulterior motive there.
Trying to set Jamie and Laoghaire up
After seeing how Jamie acted in Hall, it’s not all that surprising Claire thought there was something between Jamie and Laoghaire. I loved seeing her attempt to set the two of them up.
I know Laoghaire is one of the most hated Outlander characters going, but this was the moment I just saw her as a 16-year-old girl smitten with a boy she remembered from years earlier. She viewed Jamie as her savior and her interest in him turned from crush to love.
Realizing what was really wrong with Tammas
Throughout the episode, Claire got a look at the justice system and met Father Bain for the first time. She also got a look at how illnesses could be considered as demonic possession purely because people didn’t know any different.
Claire is sure that it’s poison. She just needs to figure out what it is. She goes on a mission to figure out the truth, which leads to a standoff with Father Bain to save the life of Mrs. Fitz’s nephew.
Learning of the folk song
Finally, we get the moment Claire realizes that there is a way back home. Up to this point, she’s tried to get back to the stones but started to wonder if she would even get back home. What if the stones sent her to another time?
Jamie translates the song at the end of the episode. She hears a folk song of a woman coming through the fairy stones and then returning home. There’s this sense of renewed hope that she can get back to Frank.
