Watching Jamie train the horses

There’s something so cute about watching him train the horses. I think it all comes down to what Jamie would love in life. He just wants to get back home and live the life of the laird of Lallybroch. It’s all about the life he was raised to live.

We see him work so well with the horses. They’re more than just creatures to him. He feels for them. He wants them to do well. And he puts in a lot of effort to get things right.

It’s another sense of his character. We see the work he loves to do, the way he’s been brought up.

Taking the beating for Laoghaire

Finally, it’s all about the time in Hall. Jamie steps forward to take the beating for Laoghaire.

I will say that this moment is the reason there’s so much confusion in Laoghaire’s head. She sees this as Jamie showing his interest in her. It’s a romantic gesture to her, showing her that they’re meant to be together. For Jamie, it was just a matter of reputation—not his, but hers.

He knew what taking the beating would do to her and her reputation. Him taking a beating is nothing. We don’t get the full story that the book delves into, but I don’t feel we need it. We just know that he doesn’t like humiliation and won’t subject a person to it if he can avoid it.
