Protecting his sister

When Jamie tells Claire about what led to him getting the flogging, we get a flashback. This is a chance to see the type of man Jamie is. It’s important to set up stories in the future, so I’m really glad the show opted for a flashback instead of just telling us the story.

Jamie will do anything for the people he loves. At that point, it’s Jenny. He will do whatever he can to prevent Jenny’s honor from being taken. Even if it means his own death, he will fight back.

There’s a sense of regret as Jamie tells the story. After all, this is the last he saw of Jenny.

Comforting Claire

Despite his story, Jamie has so much compassion for Claire. As she thinks about Frank, she realizes that he’s not alive yet. He’s not even been born.

It’s heartbreaking for her. She’s tired, she’s grieving in some sense, and she just wants to get back home. After holding it in for so long, Claire breaks down and leans on Jamie.

He comforts her by the fire. It’s such a romantic moment on the show; one of the best Claire and Jamie moments on the entire series so far. We see the type of guy he really is.
