Diana Gabaldon could start working on both of her next Outlander books at once
It’s always fun to see how Diana Gabaldon works. One thing we know is that she doesn’t work on Outlander linearly.
Previously, we shared that it looked like the prequel book would be the next one on the list after Book 9. However, Gabaldon later clarified in a tweet that it isn’t necessarily the case. Instead, she’s going to likely work on both the prequel novel and the 10th book in the main series at the same time.
How could she possibly do that? Well, she’s always said that she doesn’t write in a straight line. In fact, Herself tends to write different snippets that come to her for all her books. She then goes back and fill in the gaps, bridging the main sections that she already has written. If something for another book comes to mind, she’ll write it and save it.
That’s how she’s always worked. That’s how she will always work. And it’s never steered her wrong yet, so why not keep doing what works? If you ask any author, they all have their own way of writing. For example, R.L. Stein has full outlines of all his books so he knows exactly where the story is going before he even sits down to write his Goosebumps books.
Which Outlander book will come first?
If Diana Gabaldon is going to work on both the prequel novel and the 10th book at the same time, which one will come first?
In the tweet to a fan, she shared that it will depend on which one takes off first. There will be one that stands out more than the other, which has more ideas flowing than the other. When that happens, the other book will be put to one side with her full focus on the one that has taken over. That could be Book 10 or it could be the book about Jamie’s parents.
Either way, we’ll eventually get the two books. We’ll also get at least one more Lord John Grey book. They’ll happen when they happen.
