Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter
There is a little foreshadowing within the chapter. The first being the mentions of the Comte spreading the rumor that Claire is a witch. Nobody believes him right now, but eventually, some will start to listen to the rumors.
I’ve mentioned it before, but I still can’t remember if it is Jamie who spreads the rumors of Claire being a white witch. Either way, she is known as “La Dame Blanche” eventually, and this could be a foreshadowing that this will happen.
Another element of foreshadowing is the mention that dueling is illegal. Jamie doesn’t care about breaking this law, knowing that there are places that dueling can happen. It’s a moment to note as Jamie will want to duel a certain dragoon when he learns of that dragoon being alive.
It is a sign that Jamie doesn’t have that much respect for a law that he doesn’t agree with. He believes he will get away with it anyway, which we know isn’t the case.
There’s also the conversation of the hospital. It’s clear from this that Claire will choose to work in the hospital. We’ve already had the hints that she isn’t happy in her life as the lady of the house. She wants to do something more, and now she’s found it. Jamie will just have to deal with it.
Jamie’s main concern is the child. However, he’s also stressed about everything going on with the Jacobite problem. That’s going to get worse before it gets better!
