Jamie doesn’t have the time-traveling gene in Outlander

No matter how much you may want to see Jamie in the future in Outlander, it’s not going to happen. At least, that’s the way it will remain in the books.

Fans have often mentioned how they’d love to see Jamie in the future. For some it’s about getting Jamie into a safer time with his family. For others, it’s about just seeing Jamie witness the future instead of hearing about it. However, it’s definitely not going to happen.

Diana Gabaldon recently responded to a fan on Twitter about the topic. When the fan said they’d love to see Jamie witness Brianna and Roger’s world, Gabaldon simply stated “never gonna happen.”

Jamie simply doesn’t have the time-traveling gene that is needed to go through the stones. We’ve seen him touch the stones on the TV series (although I’ll admit that I can’t remember that ever happening in the books) and it’s clear that he doesn’t have the ability. There’s no changing the canon in the books.

Jamie probably won’t travel in the show, either!

While the show has been known to make a few changes here and there, one thing is likely to remain in place when it comes to the time-traveling rules. The need for the gene is in place.

Not only have we seen Jamie touch the stone and do nothing, but we’ve seen Young Ian touch the stone with nothing happening. Claire, Brianna, and Roger all believe that it has something to do with their genes. They have that time-traveling gene passed down to them.

It will be interesting to know if Geillis found a way around the need for the gene. Is she a descendent of Master Raymond or did she manage to open the portals to her and make it possible to time travel? Again, I don’t remember the books going through this, but it’s been a while since I’ve read Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager.

Whatever the way Geillis did open up the ability, there’s no way Jamie would do the same. He wouldn’t sacrifice people for something like this, and he certainly wouldn’t want to go to the future. It is a safer time, but he wouldn’t fit in there. I don’t think a story of Jamie in the future would be as interesting as others believe, but that’s just my opinion.

It’s going to take a lot for the show to change this. I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I understand why people want Jamie in the future, but it isn’t going to happen. Diana Gabaldon routinely makes that clear.
