Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

This is an important chapter to push us into the next book. There’s that focus on where Claire and Jamie will go next.

Claire is torn. Part of her wants the simple life somewhere in France. Jamie has plenty of connections that could allow that. They could live on a farm and just enjoy some sort of safety.

This does offer a little foreshadowing for the fourth book. When they get to the colonies, they need to decide what to do next. There is the opportunity of staying at River Run, but in the end, they choose to take the land offer from Governor Tryon and end up with their quieter life. It’s not forever, but there’s enough quietness to enjoy each other’s company.

In the end, Claire realizes that they may need to go to Rome. They may not get the quieter life but will need to do something about the upcoming war.

In the previous chapter, Anslem had mentioned that Claire might be here to make some changes. Could that change be Culloden? Could heading to Rome help to prevent the destruction of the Highland way of life?

Whatever they choose, this chapter foreshadows how much Claire and Jamie’s connection will grow. They will always be stronger together. They will always have each other on their minds. While foreshadowing the future, it also links back to an earlier chapter when Jamie wondered if what they had was normal.

It certainly isn’t, and that’s not in a bad way.
