Connecting to the Outlander TV series

This is certainly a chapter used for the show, but in vastly different ways. The episode “The Search” isn’t a favorite for many. I started with a love-hate relationship for it until I really got to understand the reasonings behind the development.

The episode allows us to see Claire and Murtagh’s bond grow better. We see them lean on each other and share stories. This allows us the chance to learn about the bracelets (which doesn’t happen until a later chapter in the book), giving us the chance to see that there’s a softer side to Murtagh. We understand more about Murtagh’s need to protect Jamie.

In a TV show, this sort of character development is important. And I think it’s more important in the show than the book. As viewers, we need to feel connected to the various characters and storylines, while the book can allow us just to focus more on the main characters, the main story. The show also has less time to create these deeper characters, which means a need to change up the story a little.

There’s also a little more about the gypsies. In the books, they help Claire although Murtagh doesn’t trust them. In the show, they make it harder for Claire and Murtagh to find Jamie—in the show, they don’t have a clue which direction Jamie would head unlike in the books.

We get a chance to see the danger and deception. There’s more drama for an episode, keeping it contained to one thing before moving onto the atrocities of Wentworth Prison.

Finally, we get to see the adaptation of Dougal and Claire’s meeting. For the most part, this is all the same. There’s no need to change this since we need a bit of a catch up on previous storylines while also seeing Dougal make this proposition to Claire.

It all brings about the ending to the chapter. Dougal allows Claire to ask his men to help. Instead of Rupert leading the charge, Willie is the one to do it. That makes Rupert have to give in.
