Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter does have a short touch on more day-to-day life at Lallybroch. Claire is writing out some of the receipts. There’s a discussion on how long it takes to make candles, which certainly made me thankful for the modern technology that we have today.

I’ll be honest when I say I didn’t connect that much with the description of childbirth in the chapter. The way Jenny describes it isn’t the way I experienced it either time. However, there is a lot of material that tells us every pregnancy is different, and that’s most definitely the case!

That being said, this is an important chapter for Claire’s bond with Jenny. It all starts with Claire, Jamie, Jenny, and Ian reminiscing and telling stories. The men would like to know what being pregnant is like, but it’s not really something Jenny thinks the men will be able to understand.

So, Jamie suggests that Jenny tells Claire. As a woman, Claire should be able to understand it. That leads to a beautiful description (even though I don’t connect, I still find it beautiful). She doesn’t just share what it’s like being pregnant, either. She shares what the start of labor can feel like.

At the end of the night, Jenny and Ian head to bed. That’s when Claire notices that Wee Jamie has fallen asleep by the fire. Has he been forgotten about by his parents?

Jamie knows that Jenny wouldn’t forget Wee Jamie. She doesn’t forget anything. That means the two chose to leave Wee Jamie to sleep. With the fire put out, the two adults also decide to leave him in the room. He can find his own way to his parents’ room if he wakes.

There is a joke about Wee Jamie seeing what happens in a bedroom, so he’s not as much of a novice as Jamie was with Claire.
