Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

I’m not 100% sure that there’s any foreshadowing within the chapter. There doesn’t seem to be.

It’s one that’s focused on the past. It’s a chapter that’s about learning more about the characters more than anything else. I guess the main focus is on how Claire and Jamie will parent their child. Rather than foreshadowing, there’s the longing we all have of Claire and Jamie raising children together. They never got the chance to do that.

Another element may be of Ian always being there for his friend. The two are partners in crime and that’s the way they’ll stay.

Something that I did find bittersweet was Jamie making the promise that he would return to Lallybroch. The two know that they need to leave, but he wants to return. He wants to be laird again. We know it’s a promise that Jamie can’t keep, but he intends to keep it.

Does it count when you break a promise but don’t mean to break it? Jamie takes his vows seriously, and a promise is like a vow. But everything that stops him from getting back to Lallybroch and staying there is out of his control. That doesn’t mean it’s ever forgotten.
