Adapting the Outlander chapter for the series

This is certainly a chapter that the show-first fans will recognize. It’s one of the most memorable chapters with Jamie in the stream fixing the mill.

However, there is a big change. Instead of using Grannie MacNab, Jenny joins Claire on the grass, allowing the two to get to know each other a little more. And I do think it is to allow us to know Jenny more.

With so little time in the show, the writers had to condense moments. By replacing Grannie MacNab with Jenny, we got some of the conversations between Jenny and Claire while keeping some of the funnier (and sometimes more dramatic) moments in the books. We needed the dragoons to remind us of the dangers of Claire and Jamie remaining at Lallybroch, but we didn’t necessarily need to know Grannie MacNab for the Rabbie part.

Personally, I appreciated that we got to know Jenny better at this point in the series. I loved seeing this bond between Claire and Jenny growing. I just wish that some of the circumstances could have been different.

As for the mill part, this was used in full. As I said, it was important for the story, adding a sense of danger for this small part of the episode.
