Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter
This is one of those chapters I didn’t spot a lot of foreshadowing in. What I did spot was some moments that could come back as memories or become important for the development of bonds.
For example, there’s the focus on Claire and Jenny’s bond. Both ask questions and make statements that mean something else. Claire knows that Jenny is protective of Jamie, and she doesn’t begrudge Jenny for that. In fact, I sense a respect for Jenny’s fiery protectiveness of her brother, even if she is at the end of a subtle interrogation.
Yet, by the end of the chapter, the two women are on friendlier terms. Jenny is happy that Jamie is happy and she’s happy that Claire isn’t a gold digger, something Jenny fears. There’s the opening for a strong relationship if both women want it.
I guess the only foreshadowing I do see is that Jenny will always take her brother’s side. She will always look out for him and make sure he’s got someone in his corner. And she will always want him to be happy, even if it means him marrying someone who we know as readers isn’t suited for him.
And we get the mention of Sawney. We know later that Sawney comes up. This is a hint that the loss of Sawney will be hard for Jamie. It’s more than just a childhood toy but something that he has to remind him of his brother, similarly to the pearls that belonged to his mom and the ring that belonged to his dad.
