The use of the chapter on the Outlander TV series

Finally, we touch on how this chapter was used for the show. For the most part, everything that took place at Lallybroch took place on the show. There were just a few differences in the setting and some of the storyline.

The argument between Jamie and Jenny happened outside the house. This allowed Ian to get into the argument much sooner, quickly pointing out that Wee Jamie was his son and not Black Jack Randall’s. We also see Jenny much more hostile toward Claire than in the books, although I do think that’s more because we see Jenny’s reaction instead of being told it.

When the conversation moves inside, we get to see Jenny tell her full story. There’s more to what Black Jack Randall did in the show. It’s not the kick that stops him. Jenny just laughs at him when he can’t perform and that leads to him knocking her out and leaving. Getting this story allows the series to show and not tell. It’s a method of storytelling routinely used, allowing us to get to know the characters more.

Like so many other chapters that were adapting with the same words but slightly different setting or different minor details, the main focus of this chapter was captured. It didn’t feel off and we got some of the best lines from the books used in the show.
