Outlander Book Club: Book 1, Chapter 23 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a little foreshadowing of things to come. The first is a mention of France and the Colonies again. Claire mentions both, and we know that they travel to both in the books. It almost feels like a foreshadow of where their journeys will later take them, giving them a promise of protection and a new life.
However, Jamie focuses on Lallybroch. This gives a hint that he will get back there and that Claire will get a chance to meet Jenny.
However, most of the foreshadowing for me surrounds Black Jack Randall. There’s this sense that Jamie will never fully be free of the man; that he’s always going to be lurking. At the same time, Claire won’t be free of him. She can’t picture Frank anymore, and it feels like foreshadowing that she’s never going to be as connected to Frank again in the future.
Of course, there’s also the Duke of Sandringham connection. The more he’s mentioned, the more it’s clear that he is going to show up again.
Finally, it’s all about Laoghaire. This continues from previous chapters with a reminder that this woman is going to cause a problem. The look Claire notices tells us that Laoghaire believed Jamie was interested in her and now she will want revenge.
