Connecting to the Outlander TV series

Much of this chapter was adapted into the show perfectly. We got to see Claire and Jamie get to know each other a little more and they certainly consummated their marriage.

Some of the funnier moments of the chapter made their way into the show. For example, when Jamie discusses how he’d seen animals do things and decided that must be the way a man and woman have sex. He talks about how Rupert and Murtagh gave him pointers, but he chooses not to trust everything they say.

Jamie allows Claire to take the lead in the bedroom. He’s kind and compassion and he certainly understands about her being nervous. There are elements of the chapter that developed differently, such as Claire and Jamie undressing in front of each other, but for the most part, the feelings from the chapter are there in the scenes on the show.

There’s a reason this is one of the fans’ most favorite episodes of the whole series. It’s because it captures the heart of the chapter, even with a few small changes.

One of the biggest changes is Claire going down for food. When she heads downstairs, she’s not embarrassed by the men. However, Dougal is there to give her a few warnings. After all, he wants to make sure the marriage is valid to avoid danger for all.

One thing I don’t remember in the scene is Jamie having the discussion about secrets and lies. I know it happens at some point in the show, but I don’t remember it happening around the wedding. I’m sure I remember it around the witch trials instead. But that could be my memory on the show. It’s been a while since I’ve watched Outlander Season 1.
