Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

I don’t think there’s too much foreshadowing within this chapter. It’s mostly about Claire and Jamie being in the moment, focused on the wedding. However, there are a couple of elements that do stand out.

The first is that Jamie sees this as a legal marriage. While he’s doing it to keep Claire safe, he has other reasons to want to marry. And he wants to do this right. It’s important to him that his new wife gets the day she deserves. He is also ready to treat Claire kindly and fairly.

We get a glimpse of this with the giving of the pearls. These are his mother’s pearls. They mean the world to him, but he passes them onto his new wife. They mark Jamie pulling Claire into his family, offering as much of himself as he can; offering his heart.

The ring continues that. We later find out that it’s Brian’s ring, but at this point, it’s just the first time he’s worn a ring. He wanted to look his best, even though we later find out that he just carries his father’s ring around him normally.

Jamie offering the ring without a second thought continues this idea that he wants the best possible day for Claire. He wants things to go as smoothly as possible. I also get the sense of a sacrifice. He’s giving up pearls and a ring that mean everything to him; he’ll give up what he can for the sake of Claire.

It’s not a lot of foreshadowing, but it shows the connection the two will have in the future.
